The Vestibular system is situated in the inner portion of the ear behind the eardrum. It is this sensory apparatus tells the brain when you are moving, accelerating or decelerating. The vestibular system assists in balance, spatial orientation and coordinates your eye movements. The vestibular system sends signals primarily to the brain, neural structures that control eye movements and to the muscles that keep us upright maintaining balance. When there is a problem with this system people experience a sensations of vertigo or dizziness as well as nausea and vomiting. The most common pathology with the vestibular system is a condition called BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo). This condition can be treated by a My Sippy Downs Physio with specific movements and exercises. The Physiotherapist may also prescribe balance related exercises.
